Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure to remove one or more of the third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth. These teeth are the last to develop, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have wisdom teeth that emerge without issues, others experience problems that necessitate their removal.
Reasons for Wisdom Tooth ExtractionImpaction:
Partially Erupted: Wisdom teeth may only partially emerge from the gum line, making them difficult to clean and prone to infection.
Fully Impacted: Teeth that remain completely trapped within the jawbone or gum tissue can lead to pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth.
Crowding: The jaw may not have enough space to accommodate wisdom teeth, causing them to push against other teeth, leading to crowding or shifting of the existing teeth.
Infection or Gum Disease: Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create a flap of gum tissue that traps food and bacteria, leading to gum disease or infections such as pericoronitis.
Tooth Decay: Wisdom teeth are often hard to reach with a toothbrush or floss, making them more susceptible to cavities.
