A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between two adjacent teeth. It consists of artificial teeth, called pontics, which are supported by dental crowns or abutments attached to the teeth on either side of the gap.
There are several types of dental bridges, including traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bridges. The most common type is the traditional bridge, which involves placing dental crowns on the natural teeth adjacent to the missing tooth or teeth, with the pontic or pontics suspended between them.
The process of getting a dental bridge typically involves several steps:
● Examination and preparation: The dentist examines the teeth and gums to determine if a dental bridge is the appropriate treatment option. If so, the adjacent teeth (abutment teeth) are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel to accommodate the dental crowns.● Impressions: Impressions or molds of the teeth are taken to create a custom-made dental bridge that fits precisely in the mouth.● Temporary bridge: A temporary bridge may be placed to protect the prepared teeth while the permanent bridge is being fabricated in a dental laboratory.● Bridge placement: Once the permanent bridge is ready, it is checked for fit, color, and alignment before being cemented or bonded into place.
