Dental deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical procedure performed by a dentist or dental hygienist to treat periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. It involves removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gum line and smoothing the surfaces of the tooth roots to promote gum tissue healing and attachment.
The procedure typically consists of two main steps:
● Scaling: During scaling, the dentist or hygienist uses special dental instruments to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the tooth surfaces, both above and below the gum line. This helps to eliminate bacteria and toxins that contribute to gum inflammation and infection.● Root planing: Root planing involves smoothing the rough surfaces of the tooth roots to remove bacterial toxins and create a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth. This helps to reduce inflammation, shrink periodontal pockets, and prevent further progression of gum disease.
Dental deep cleaning is usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Depending on the severity of the gum disease, the procedure may be completed in one or more visits.
